Carlotta Jr.

Bio:

So far not much is known about the debutant-in-training. She's short, curious, and probably a younger version of Mrs. Fairfax, her namesake. She and her big sis Charlie don't seem to have a very close relationship. Though Charles Jr. definitely takes first place when it comes to irking the oddball of the three. I'd say it's a safe bet that she's Mommy's little princess and if nothing changes she'll most likely wind up an exact replica. One can only hope she snaps out of it. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Alias: Carlotta Fairfax Jr.
  • Age: 8
  • DOB: June 4th
  • Race: Mortal (Human)
  • Marital Status: Single
  • Residence: Pennsylvania, USA
  • Occupation: Kid
  • First Appearance: #01. Enrolment

Bonus Facts:

  • Thus far, she's been a fairly quiet background character. It's hard to tell what's going on in that pigtailed head of hers.
  • She seems to waver between following her mother's expectations and zoning out into her own little world.
  • Her behavior leads the reader to suspect that maybe she's not as content with her life as her mother would like to think.
  • The poor kid really doesn't seem to have much of a childhood. [source1] and [source2]

More Facts

  • The enrollment charm is more than just an attractive badge the bears the school emblem. It's an enchanted charm that draws on a prospective student's subconscious and determines if they're ready for life at the Academy. It takes a special type of person to attend school with creatures from every branch of mythology (especially if they're mortal). [source]
  • The Immortal's Almanac is THE book for learning anything and everything about immortals, their magic, and the guidelines all magic-wielders must follow. Each student of the Muse Academy receives a copy and must take care to keep it safe at all times. In the wrong hands it could spell disaster for mythological creatures everywhere! So its a big deal when Calliope intentionally gives it to a mortal. [source]
  • The Music students are in charge of providing entertainment for school functions (like dances). But it's not unheard of for other students to branch off and form their own bands or sing the occasional solo/duet at a social event. [source]
  • Immortals use a variety of modern technology, just like humans do. The main difference is that their devices are powered by magic instead of electricity, which is much easier for them. [source]
  • Immortals enjoy their own television shows, transmitted via magic instead of satellite so humans can't see them. But if they want they can still hijack mortal TV, though most don't bother. [source]
  • As money holds little value for immortals (since magic can be used to supply most of their needs and wants) various types of mortal currencies are accepted as payment. This naturally comes in handy during visits or vacations into the mortal realm. Trading goods is a common practice and it isn't unusual for employees with needs for certain items (like herbs) to request those as payment instead of money. Services in the immortal realm are based on a volunteer system where people aren't always paid. Immortals have a different view of work as opposed to humans, many do their jobs for enjoyment, to acquire new skills, and to be of use to the community. [source]
  • Some students have companions (as they prefer not to think of them as 'pets') back home such as magical equines and miniature dragons. [source]

Apollo

Bio:

As the god of medicine and music, and the god best known for his association with the Muses, he's the ideal man for the role of Deputy Head and Academy Doctor. Though it may sound like a lot of responsibility it's actually a nice reprieve from his godly duties. With his powers somewhat minimized he can now relax and enjoy a more carefree lifestyle. He's one smooth talker and the teacher crush of several Academy girls. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal
  • Race: Olympian
  • Residence: Muse Academy/Olympus
  • Occupation: Deputy Head, Academy Doctor
  • First Appearance: #01. Enrolment

Bonus Facts:

  • Apollo is an oracle, though he presently doesn't give many predictions.
  • Though he was often described as being the 'leader of the Muses' in Greek mythology the position obviously rests with the true head Muse, Calliope. Self-discipline, among other traits, make her far more qualified.
  • Occasionally his ambition to gain Calliope's job as dean of the Academy will come out, proving that even the mellow medic has a proud, selfish side.

A Quick History Lesson

Book Two

pages 1-9

Let me just say that the exams for the Book One lesson were a smashing success! Well done students, you really know your MA facts. Now let's see how well those keen minds digest this new lesson's first overview of Book Two.

We began by observing our heroine Charlie Fairfax as she typed an e-mail message to her family regarding her first week at the Muse Academy. Said message described her roommate (or perhaps dormmate would be a more appropriate term considering they each have a room to themselves) Brigit who's a rather unique and reclusive individual. We learned that classes will begin the following Monday and in the meantime Miss Fairfax has been familiarizing herself with the campus and her fellow students. Though one occasion nearly cost her a broken rib (never cross paths with a pair of quarreling satyrs). But even that cloud had its silver lining when a rather attractive faerie named Stellan offered her a hand.

Charlie ended her message on the note that she would be departing with Brigit to choose classes for the upcoming semester. Of course it took a bit of coaxing on her roommate's part to get her to venture back out into the perilous immortal-filled halls. As for how it went? Well...let's just say that her first trip to tragedy class was...well...a tragedy.

Showing up fully clad in football gear (or as Brigit put it: "protection") left Charlie feeling a tad more awkward than someone with the usual new student jitters. Now we are left to ponder what woes the arrival of the ever-broody Melpomene (Muse of Tragedy) will bring.

{UPDATE}

pages 10-31

Prepare yourselves pupils for another exhilarating lesson on the contents of Book Two! So much was covered since our last class so expect to take in quite a bit of information. Oh but being such bright students I'm sure you'll have no trouble adding it to your memory banks.

So, let's start by saying that some days it simply doesn't pay to be mortal. This was especially true for Charlie when Melpomene was informed of her humanity. As to the teacher's reaction well... it's certainly no coincidence that the word is Melodramatic. Luckily our heroine managed to dunk down and stay low for the remainder of the class by immersing herself in reading a chapter from the Immortal's Almanac.

Having already settled on Epic Poetry for her major young Miss Fairfax realized that finding a minor would prove more difficult than blindly navigating a labyrinth. Needless to say Tragedy was most definitely out. With History proving a bore, Music beyond her scope of talent, and Astronomy much too overwhelming (and Dance something she wasn't about to attempt) Charlie was quickly running out of options. Still, that did leave Comedy (taught by Thalia) as a possibility. Though Brigit didn't endorse the idea describing the Muse as overly conflicting with Melpomene, treating everything as a joke, and possessing a general tendency to take things too far.

The conversation took a sudden turn (right off into left field) when the elf spotted Charlie ogling the ever-dashing faerie Stellan. In a brief explanation Brigit noted that while many faes are attractive in an "other-worldly" way (especially to mortals) it is almost always skin deep (with Stellan being one of the rare exceptions to that rule). Those of you taking notes may want to star that for future reference...

As it turns out, it takes less than five minutes for an unsupervised mortal—in an academy filled with immortals—to get herself into trouble. While her roommate was off on a quick errand our well-meaning heroine found herself caught up in a stampede of students and whisked away to an unfamiliar part of the building. Entering the nearest room she came upon the Aphrodite House sorority rush and encountered a rather chipper blonde angel by the name of Mina. Their introduction was cut short by a sudden outburst from the president of said sorority house, the satyr Yani. Strangely enough the newcomer apologized for the angel's "over-excitable" behavior and the lack of vacancies at the house (a statement most perplexing because of the enthusiasm Mina had shown to Charlie with regards to joining). Glancing toward the angel, who now stood laughing with another member, Charlie was left to ponder the seemingly friendly blonde's intentions. Was it all just a cruel joke, as Yani explained, or perhaps an honest mistake? As Charlie excused herself from the room the smirking satyr left much to be questioned about the members of Aphrodite House.

Could this be our first glimpse at immortal antagonists? The answer lies in the pages ahead.

{UPDATE}

pages 32-53

Front and center class! The tardy bell just rang and that means up from your napping and cease with the yapping! We've a great deal to cover and precious little time in which to do so. I hope those pencils are sharpened because we're diving right in!

Charlie explained her disheartening encounter with the Aphrodite House girls (and Mina) to Brigit upon her return. The elf was quick to bash both the sorority and the angelic blonde (and Ares House as well). We later learn that she has her own 'axe to grind' with Mina.

During their second practice in helping Charlie survive the 'hourly stampede' the human was tugged into the path of an angel on his way to Music class. Modest and clumsy Kipp seems to have arguably worse luck than our heroine herself. Though he shrugged off the mishap with a smile the two girls wound up joining him for lunch to make amends.

While the trio discussed Charlie's dilemma in choosing a minor at the cafeteria their new friend was beamed by a flying milk carton and did a face plant in his dessert. Another nasty trick from the Aphrodite House sorority girls. While the blondes giggled from a few tables away the angel excused himself to clean up. Brigit's anger reached its boiling point and she vowed to settle the score with the 'witches'—especially Mina—that night!

For whatever reason Kipp was reluctant to retaliate against his abusers, even after words of encouragement from Brigit and Charlie. But he was kind enough to escort Miss Fairfax to Comedy class while her roommate attended Astronomy. Perhaps there she would find a suitable minor? Along the way Kipp explained that the teacher Thalia was known for her wiley behavior and made comparisons to the other muses... But Charlie's attention was swayed by the sight of Mina, the same Mina from before, embracing her crush! Oh the drama!

A charging satyr left Kipp's papers scattered (again) and forced the mortal to venture ahead on her own to find a seat before the bell. Although there was but a single occupant in the room when she arrived. It has been said that it is often easier to tell your problems to a stranger than a friend. So as our heroine had few friends at the Academy to begin with I suppose it makes sense that she would choose to talk with the inquisitive carrot top about her latest upset. But is it really wise to confide something so personal to someone you've only just met? We shall see...

{UPDATE}

pages 54-87

Well surprise, surprise! As it turns out Charlie's sympathetic listener in Comedy class was none other than Thalia herself! The fun-loving muse apparently has a penchant for revenge as this is precisely what she advised our heroine to seek. Though having her problem explained to the entire class was humiliating Thalia's advice appeared to strike a chord with Miss Fairfax. With the gears turning in her head Charlie agreed to meet her roommate at the coffeehouse in nearby Prie Village to get a little payback on the Aphrodite House.

She arrived at McJitters in time to see the elf perform at a poetry jam. Once the snapping died down the scheming began. The plan? Pinkify Mina's blonde hair. That's right, an attack on her vanity! After a quick wardrobe change (compliments of Brigit) our 'heroine' snuck into enemy territory to execute the plan. She encountered a rather close call with the house leader (Yani) but managed to slip inside the angel's room and mix the hair dye into her shampoo bottle.

The peace of the following morning was shattered by a horrified scream. Following her morning shower Mina had discovered the trick and—to put it mildly—was less than amused. Brigit couldn't have been happier.

Later the two roommates started off for Romance class together. Erato had made an exception in allowing Brigit to attend since Charlie's previous class samplings had left her a little...shaken. Just when the pair believed Mina would play sick to avoid being seen with pink hair they spotted her entering the class looking miserable and hiding her shame under a wintry hat.

Erato made her appearance, fashionably late, and jumped right into the lesson. As one might expect, Brigit seized the first opportunity she could find to make matters worse for the angel. Raising her hand (to voluntarily answer a question) at just the right angle she managed to knock off Mina's hat and expose her newly dyed locks to the class. The other students immediately broke into murmurs, noting her new look and how greatly it differed from sorority girl standards. Excusing herself Mina fled the classroom and escaped our radar until later in the cafeteria.

While Brigit and Charlie discussed the new rumors concerning Mina's 'fashion disaster' and the next poetry jam their prank victim sat with her sorority sisters looking sullen and outcast. Our heroine's crush, the kind natured Stellan, noticed this and came over to lift her spirits. Amazing how a quick thumbs up can turn a frown upside down. So what effect will the popular faerie's opinion have on their peers? Or for that matter—Brigit and Charlie? You won't get any spoilers here, so make sure you keep reading. That's all the time we have for today students.

{UPDATE}

pages 88-137

Greetings again my attentive pupils! As usual we've a rigorous lesson ahead of us but being the bright gems that you are I know you'll study hard and ace that final exam! When we last left off perky sorority girl Mina had been experiencing a rather rough day after waking up to pink hair—courtesy of Charlie and Brigit. Only the duo's plan seems to have backfired after Stellan gave his dance partner an enthusiastic thumbs up on her new look. Brigit, irked by the outcome, went to class and left Charlie in the cafeteria with a brief farewell. Our heroine wasn't on her own for long before the lovable pacifist Kipp appeared and inquired about her down spirits. Charlie proceeded to unload her troubles on the angel until he mentioned that Mina just happened to be... his sister. Needless to say, Miss Fairfax was stunned. While admitting that his sister could be irritating, fake, and preppy Kipp insisted she wasn't 'mean' (as Charlie described her) and wondered if perhaps Charlie was just jealous. Talk about your awkward conversations. Fortunately Kipp's classmate arrived to hasten him to Music class, saving her from further embarrassment.

Later that day in their dorm we see Charlie discussing the turn of events with her roommate. The elf informs her that Kipp and Mina are actually twins (although the two spend very little time together). Brigit insists Kipp is being delusional by denying his sister's mean nature while Charlie fears she's ruined the bond they were forming. As if things couldn't get any more complicated, Calliope arrives with a surprise third roommate in tow. To Brigit's horror—and thanks to Charlie's premature acceptance—the target of their revenge scheme will now be sharing their dorm! The now ex-sorority girl huffily explains that their little stunt got her kicked out because she no longer meets the blonde requirement of the house's 'uniform code'. Right from the start it's war between the two and Charlie's left caught in the crossfire. Struggling with a guilty conscience and preconceived opinion of Mina leaves the mortal tired and stressed to the breaking point. A brief conversation with the dean suggests that perhaps things are not quite as they seem. Ah yes, as the old saying goes "you can't judge a book by its cover" (although the information some give can be quite accurate).

Kipp pops by the dorm to check on his sister afterward, giving Charlie a chance to clear the air. And wouldn't you know it? The very reason Miss Fairfax began detesting Mina was entirely unfounded! As Kipp explains, Stellan and Mina (or "Fred and Ginger") are actually only dance partners and nothing more. We also learn that Mina has taken a vow of celibacy so that she can focus on her studies and not—well—other things. Ahem! While he's at it, Kipp goes on to clue our heroine in on the true mastermind behind the evil sorority... Yani. The satyr is revealed to be smart, manipulative, and a controlling bully. Being easily led, Mina fit into the 'hive' of Yani-supporting drones perfectly and was often the fall girl who took the blame for Yani's cutting remarks. When the new pink-haired Mina began to stand out and draw attention from the satyr, she was conveniently thrown out on grounds of 'violating uniform code'. Most disheartening of all, Kipp admits to taking the sorority's abuse for the sake of his sister's happiness. Ironic considering her displeasure at the bullying. Charlie grows angry at Mina's lack of protests but the brunet points out that his sister would suffer Yani's wrath should either of them object. As reality sinks in with Miss Fairfax the angel mentions Brigit's aloof behavior. You might find some humor in discovering that our 'lovable' brooder is actually quite the conformist in her attempts at non-conformity. Trying to be part of any specific group—be it jocks, preps, or Goths—can hardly be considered a true promotion of individuality. Cliques, dear students, are cliques.

By some stroke of good luck, or perhaps divine intervention, Mina overhears the conversation. This leads her to re-evaluate the situation and herself as a person. Our heroine notices the change the next morning. The angel is cheerier, more confident, and expressing her own individual style. As Charlie is still trying to decide on a minor Mina informs her that Kipp's roommate will be taking her to Sacred Poetry. Of course, things can never stay peaceful for too long before the Fates decide to stir them up. After Charlie apologizes for the prior incident Mina reveals that Brigit's temper has driven twelve roommates away and thus she was somewhat happy to be the target of the elf's aggression instead of her. A show of said aggression occurs when Brigit makes jibs about Mina's new look as the pair leave. Some insults are exchanged, along with a startling display of gratitude from Mina for the prank, and then the rivals part ways in the typical huff. Brigit fumes at the angel's audacity (remarks about the elf being an 'insecure little girl' and a 'bully' who was no better than Yani) and you might know that that spurred more thoughts of revenge. Sigh, the cycle continues.

Meanwhile, Mina escorts Charlie to class where she encourages her to make her own choices and not just follow the crowd. Kipp's roommate, Todd, arrives and Miss Fairfax is struck speechless by the appearance of such a... well, 'normal-looking' person. The two hit it off fairly well and proceed to Sacred Poetry, which is taught by the passionate yet easy-going muse Polyhymnia. Due to her summer travels the class was actually the first of the semester and was described as spanning across many areas of study (religion, cultures, traditions, and more). I don't know if you caught her expression but our heroine seemed most intrigued.

Remember what I said about the Fates earlier? Well I hope you were paying attention because what happened next is another prime example. Yani and her sorority sisters had an encounter with Mina in the hall after class. The satyr attempted to ruffle her feathers with some insulting remarks and didn't back down until she had the angel's blood boiling. In true bully fashion, Yani offered to 'help' the ex-sorority girl by accepting her back, provided she wear a blonde wig and play by her rules. Fortunately Mina declined the offer with a statement on Yani's two-faced nature. Finally deciding to stand up for herself the angel went on to declare that she would no longer be the scapegoat for Yani's insults and was done abiding by the strict rules of a 'sad little satyr with a self esteem problem'. Ouch. Hmph, mild-mannered or not, you can only push someone so far before they snap.

With the heated confrontation attracting a crowd there's no telling how the ordeal might end. Still, I think it's safe to say that Mina has definitely invoked Yani's wrath. Now that those gears are turning I'll get the tests printing and have the study guides passed around. Make sure you're here next class for the exciting conclusion of Book Two!

{UPDATE}

pages 138-156

Alas dear pupils, Book Two is drawing to a close. With Book Three on the horizon we've just a bit more to wrap up before the big test. So if you've all got your study guides handy I suggest we get straight to work!

It was sorority sister verses ex-sorority sister when we last checked in on the students of the Muse Academy. Yani's offer to 'help' Mina rejoin the Aphrodite House didn't go over well with the now pink-haired angel. In fact, it sparked quite an argument out in the hall. With a crowd of students looking on Mina proceeded to give the sassy satyr a piece of her mind, thoroughly humiliating Yani in the process. Seeing the normally meek angel stand up to the hoofed bully gave others the courage to join in. Kipp's makeup jab even earned a snicker from Thalia. When Yani retaliated we learned that her grudge against him stemmed from being ignored instead of feared, a reaction she didn't get from other students. Stellan stepped forward to question if those labeled 'losers' by the popular girl were actually the people possessing talents she envied. And several members of the crowd were happy to chime in with their own suspicions. Bandwagons, class, travel both ways.

And so respect was earned, enemies were made, and a certain Head Muse appeared less than pleased about the whole confrontation. As the crowd disbursed Miss Fairfax approached Calliope for a quick chat about the events and—more importantly—to name her minor as Sacred Poetry. Though after being handed a reading list the size of a party banner for Epic Poetry our heroine could be in for quite the challenge.

In the following scene we saw Charlie and Kipp attending the poetry reading at McJitters in Prie Village. When Brigit (who had been MIA throughout the school day) stepped up to the mic with a last-minute poem things took a rather unexpected turn. The message conveyed wasn't one of revenge, quite the contrary actually. Stanza by stanza she proved that even moody elves and free spirited angels have a lot to learn from each other. Even those from very different worlds can find common ground, if they keep their minds open and respect the differences that exist between them. (Who says you never learn anything useful in school anymore?)

Whether she meant it to serve as one or not, Brigit's poem was all the apology her roommate needed. Mina surprised the elf by poking her head out from the booth next to Kipp and Charlie's and saying as much. While the two didn't straight away become the best of friends, a sort of truce was developed along with some ever important hope for the future. Amazing what finding a little common ground can do hm? Even if that 'ground' happens to be a mutual enemy. With the help of her new friends Miss Fairfax learned a great deal. Namely that friendships can be obtained, rekindled, and sparked all while being true to oneself. Life is about choices, dear students, and to live life to its fullest we must dare to be different and embrace those who accept us for who we really are.

I know you're all eager to find out what new lessons Book Three holds in store but I'm afraid that's all the knowledge we have time for today. Make sure you're prepared for the test and come to the next class ready to succeed!

Class dismissed!

For further reading you may want to check out the Muse Academy Archive. And remember: it never hurts to review!

Stellan

Bio:

He's your all-around idealistic guy and the poster boy for all that is good and wonderful about faeries. Being the hunkiest, popular, and most drooled over guy in school you'd figure he'd let some of that go to his head. But Stellan's got a positive, helpful attitude to go along with those good looks and charm. For a fae, the guy's an angel. As one elf put it: makes you wonder what's the catch?

Stel's part of the new generation of faeries that live outside of Albion's borders and tend to be more modern and like to socialize with other species. He's the nicest guy Charlie's encountered at the Academy and even Brigit must admit he's fairly easy on the eyes. As the school year continues the dashing fae will no doubt dance his way into the hearts of even more girls. You've gotta wonder how his male peers feel about that. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Alias: Nice Guy, Campus Hottie
  • Age: Immortal (eats his veggies)
  • DOB: November 25
  • Race: Faerie
  • Marital Status: Single
  • Residence: The Muse Academy, S Jason Wing
  • Occupation: Student
  • Major: Dance
  • Minor: History
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • His hometown is Albion. [source]
  • Charlie seems to have developed a bit of a crush on him...nothing new for Stel. [source]
  • Girls are constantly flocking around him. Being the most eligible bachelor on campus can be such a curse.
  • While it's not unusual for faes to have naturally otherworldly good looks he's got a friendly demeanor and doesn't pull the mean spirited pranks most of his kind are known for.

Melpomene

Bio:

Unlike her cheerful sister Erato, Melpomene walks on the darker side of life and comes with her own raincloud hovering overhead. Though most find it depressing to wallow in misery and misfortune Mel thrives off the thrill that only tragedy can bring. Almost always overly dramatic her rants border on comedic, especially when she's brooding over being the victim of yet another of Thalia's pranks. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal (life can be such a curse!)
  • Race: Muse/Olympian
  • Marital Status: Single
  • Hometown: Olympus
  • Residence: Muse Academy
  • Occupation: Muse of Tragedy
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • Harbors a secret love of soap operas. [source]
  • Rarely parts with her shades.
  • Prone to melodramatic speeches on the woes and unfairness of life. [source]
  • She revels in the drama that accompanies the misfortune of others. [source]
  • In her spare time Mel has been known to listen to emo music while simultaneously reading Edgar Allen Poe, reciting Sylvia Plath, crying and applying heavy eyeliner. [source]

Mina

Bio:

On the surface Mina is a chatty, lovable, and downright friendly go-getter who wouldn't harm a fly. But is Yani's right-hand woman really less angelic than she seems? A recent turn of events has suggested that Mina gets her laughs by playing cruel jokes on unsuspecting students like the newcomer Charlie. It's also been hinted that the anti-social elf Brigit may have been a victim of one of the angel's alleged pranks in the past and now wants revenge. Much about this sorority girl's personality remains a mystery that only time, experience, and maybe even her own 'friends' will reveal. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal
  • DOB: December 28th
  • Race: Angel
  • Hometown: Black Forest, Germany
  • Residence: Aphrodite House
  • Occupation: Student
  • Major: Romance
  • Minor: Dance
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • Outwardly sweet natured and a bit overzealous when making someone's acquaintance. [source]
  • A bit flighty in her behavior and prone to 'blonde moments'. [source]
  • Her sunny and bubbly demeanor tends to diminish in the presence of the sorority house president Yani. She appears to yield unquestioningly to the satyr. [source]
  • Her own friend/superior Yani has accused Mina (behind her back) of having a mean streak that comes out during recruitment drives. Whether Yani did this out of genuine concern or jealousy has yet to be revealed. [source]
  • After allegedly inviting Charlie to join the sorority knowing it was already full, Brigit—whom she appears to have already made an enemy of—becomes enraged and warns Charlie never to associate with the popular crowds from the fraternities or sororities. In fact, the elf seems to hold a particular grudge against Mina. [source1], [source2], and [source3]

Yani

Bio:

With most satyrs being male, Yani's a rarity and she knows it. But she certainly isn't one to shy away from attention, in fact, she loves it! Ever confident and a born leader she soon earned herself a place as president of the Muse Academy sorority, Aphrodite House. Though her 'my way or the highway' attitude has made her one of the least liked popular students among certain peers she doesn't seem to be too bothered by it. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal (and not a blemish in sight!)
  • DOB: March 26th
  • Race: Satyr
  • Hometown: Arcadia, Greece
  • Residence: Aphrodite House
  • Occupation: Student
  • Major: Romance
  • Minor: Music
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • Apparently shallow and cocky it's quite possible Yani's let all that attention and popularity go to her head.
  • The angel Mina works as Yani's right-hand woman though the two apparently don't always see eye-to-eye. Is this the result of jealousy or is the satyr merely tired of mending fences after Mina's cruel pranks? [source1] and [source2]
  • Though she acts harmless enough (civil even to the lowest members of the social totem pole) there's still something shady about her character. [source1] and [source2]

Kipp

Bio:

Don't let the passive, geeky exterior fool you. Kipp's got an ear for music and a nose for comedy. Add to that his tendency to excel in class and you've got yourself one top notch angel! Sweet and gentle, if not a little accident prone, he's more likely to turn pages than heads at the Academy. But if you're looking for a true blue pal, look no further! Kipp's extremely loyal and protective of his friends, just one of his more prominent angelic qualities. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal
  • DOB: December 28th
  • Race: Angel
  • Hometown: Unknown
  • Residence: 7 Perseus Wing
  • Occupation: Student
  • Major: Music
  • Minor: Comedy
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • When it comes to the opinion of his teachers both Euterpe and Thalia agree that he's got talent. He's got a knack for learning to play new instruments and a sense of humor that's taking him to the top of the Comedy class! [source]
  • Yep, Kipp wears glasses. Must be a bookworm thing? [source]
  • He may be an angel but Kipp's luck is nothing to brag about. [source]
  • Poor guy's a bit quirky, quiet, naive, clumsy, and has a short attention span. [source]
  • Like a true comedian, Kipp knows the importance of being able to laugh at yourself, be it making light of an awkward situation...or a cruel joke at his expense. [source1] and [source2]
  • Even when being brutally bullied Kipp seems hesitant to retaliate, especially when the abuse is coming from a certain group of sorority girls. [source]

Thalia

Bio:

She may be the smallest of the Muses but Thalia's personality is larger than life! Her size and demeanor make it easy for students to mistake her for a peer rather than a professor. As you might expect from the Muse of Comedy Thalia likes to keep herself entertained and won't hesitate to stir up a little mayhem if things get too dull for her liking. [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal (gotta keep those laughs comin'!)
  • Race: Muse/Olympian
  • Marital Status: Single
  • Hometown: Olympus
  • Residence: Muse Academy
  • Occupation: Muse of Comedy
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • Her favorite person to target with her pranks is her mopey sister Melpomene. [source]
  • Thalia's got a fun and goofy personality, not to mention a never-ending supply of gags to pull. [source]
  • Prone to moments of instigation among students and staff, even when it subjects others to embarrassment. She probably inspired the phrase 'a joke gone too far'. [source1], [source2], and [source3]
  • Despite her faults she does show genuine concern for her students and does what she can to bring a smile to their faces. [source1] and [source2]

Todd

Bio:

Friendly, considerate, and an all around nice guy Todd doesn't seem like the sort of person who'd have many enemies. He mostly hangs out in the background and helps out when he can. Why would such a likable guy be so timid? That's a secret only Todd (and maybe his roomie Kipp) knows, though it's safe to bet that it's got something to do with his species. So what is he exactly? Well, that's yet to be revealed... [more info]

The Basics:

  • Age: Immortal
  • DOB: May 4th
  • Race: Unknown
  • Hometown: Joliet, Illinois
  • Residence: 7 Perseus Wing
  • Occupation: Student
  • Major: Sacred Poetry
  • Minor: Epics
  • First Appearance: #02. Birds of a Feather

Bonus Facts:

  • He seems to have very unusual taste in glasses... [source]
  • Being the responsible roommate that he is Todd makes an effort to keep Kipp on track and tardy-free. [source]
  • As Charlie points out, he's one of the most human-looking students at the academy. [source]

A Quick History Lesson

Book Three

pages 1-36

Attention class! The Book Two exam grades are in and, just as expected, you all did splendidly! Congratulations on your success. To ensure that the wonderful progress continues, let's jump straight into our unit on Book Three!

Things start off rather uneventfully, with Charlie and her new roommates (Brigit and Mina) sharing a meal together in Prie Village. However, after viewing the casual use of magic by her elven friend, Charlie admits to envying such abilities. Mina explains that magic should never be taken lightly and is, in fact, a way for immortals to survive in their world. Sadly, the explanation disheartens our heroine further, being a human surrounded by magic wielders on a magical floating island. With a little urging (and sulking) Charlie convinces her friends to recount the tale of how immortals came to be, and why humans were excluded.

Eons ago, as the story goes, immortality was limited to only the highest deities and a chosen few. During that time, mortals and immortals lived in close contact with one another. And that led to certain fear-based conflicts. Time took its toll, and soon humans concerned themselves more with science than magic. Hostility grew toward the magical species and many suffered under the onslaught of greedy, fearful humans. Some victims were captured, others...met with far worse fates.

Giants fell prey to the humans first. Though their brutish ways toward the smaller species left no one to grieve their loss. But when the casualties spread to other species (trolls, imps, puka...), the head deities decided the time had come to intervene. To grant eternal life to the dwindling species, they gave up their seats of power and transferred the magic from their blood to the other magical beings. And thus, immortality spread and the once renowned deities faded from human memory. For their own protection, the new immortals split off from humanity and became figures of myth and legend, living on in fairy tales.

While present day immortals (like Mina) admit that modern mortals are generally less threatening to them (and even include the occasional good natured believer) Charlie still feels both guilt over the actions of her ancestors, and remorse at being 'handicapped' in the magical world. Her roommates assure her that they'll be there to help and add that abuse of magic is strongly discouraged. It's purpose being to protect and defend, not to use for personal gain. Please be sure to jot that down students. It will most definitely be on the quiz.

Slightly relieved, Charlie joins Mina on her way back to the Academy. Being the emotionally sensitive girl that she is, Mina picks up on something troubling her friend as they walk. A bit of prodding reveals that the topic of Charlie's distress is a boy. And of course, dear pupils, we all know immediately that the mystery crush is none other than the angel's dance partner, Stellan. Unfortunately, this is also the very reason that our heroine cannot reveal his identity. Nevertheless, using her skills as a Romance student, Mina correctly guesses that this 'mystery guy' is unaware of Charlie's feeli—err—existence. She encourages her to get to know him better and then take the plunge. The advice seems to help...until Charlie lets his name slip out. The revelation stops Mina in her tracks and her words of encouragement immediately turn to words of discouragement. Now Miss Fairfax suspects her friend might be jealous, and Mina's reluctance to explain her one-eighty isn't helping.

Taking his cue, a newcomer appears, offering to help...for a price.

Robin Goodfellow, of Goodfellow Magic Supplies, Ltd., seems eager to assist Charlie with her love problem. He claims his Love in Idleness juice is just what she needs. One sip and the object of her affection will fall head-over-heels for the next thing he sees. But Mina is wary, pointing out the love is strictly the domain of Eros. The fairy salesman launches into a rather comical explanation of why a mortal like Charlie is better off using his product than waiting around for the love deity to come winging her way. While Mina and Robin banter about the salesman's intentions, Miss Fairfax looks to be seriously considering his offer. Sure enough, despite Mina's warnings, Charlie ventures back into the woods and makes the purchase.

Armed with a package of juice boxes our heroine returns to the dorm to stash them—of all places—in the kitchen cupboard. Brigit's sudden arrival causes a bit of a catastrophe when half the boxes get dropped on the floor. With the help of her elven friend Charlie manages to get the 'grape juice' mopped up; but, one can only wonder what consequences her decision holds in store for Miss Fairfax and her friends.

Right, well that's a lot of new information to take in. But don't complain, knowledge is a virtue, you know? And just think of how virtuous you'll be by the time this unit ends!

{UPDATE}

pages 37-81

Right, so when we left off last class, Miss Fairfax had made quite a mess of her "love juice" purchase. Fortunately, Brigit (still unaware of what was really in those boxes) helps her tidy up and agrees to meet her later in the cafeteria where Kipp was on "enforced-voluntary" duty for making mischief on a melodramatic muse. The cranky angel drops by the dorm shortly after Charlie leaves with one of the surviving juice boxes. The last box is spirited away when he raids the cabinets for a snack then returns to the lunch room. As you might have guessed, poor, unsuspecting Kipp winds up drinking some of the love juice. To make matters worse, a hardy slap on the back from Brigit lands the container in the Soup of the Day. For those of you wondering just how potent the potion is, well...let's just say that Kipp found himself viewing Brigit in a whole new light.

Freaked out by the lovesick stares of Mina's brother, Brigit's frantic shouts drew the dance student away from her table—giving our heroine the perfect opportunity to make her move on Stellan. Getting the hunk of a faerie to drink the juice box was easy enough, being the first person he laid eyes on...not so much. Mina's sudden return threw a major wrench in the gears and brought Charlie's worst fears to life. Now her crush really does have eyes only for Mina and, to top it off, the strange love sickness is spreading all over the academy!

A faculty meeting is called to resolve the issue. When Thalia is eliminated as a suspect—due to her lack of bragging—Calliope turns to Erato for help, relying on her sister's romantic expertise. Erato admits that the problem has spread to a scale too large for her to handle and mentions that she's called in an expert. Before we have a chance to learn more, Psyche rushes in with a mountain of paperwork and a bowl of the contaminated soup. While Apollo speculates about the source of the confusion, Psyche succumbs to the potion's effects, so much so that she forgets her own husband and falls for Apollo. Calliope begins to suspect major foul play originating from the cafeteria. With Euterpe and Melpomene in tow, the dean heads off to pay a visit to a certain prank-pulling angel.

Oddly enough, Kipp is sulking in his dorm, suffering from a juice-induced heartache. Charlie remains silent about the matter, whereas Mina tries to console her brother—while keeping her dopey eyed dance partner at a distance. As Todd voices his concerns, a knock at the door signals the muses' unexpected arrival. Calliope begins questioning the brooding student and learns about the grape juice incident. Putting two and two together, Calliope informs him that the contents of that container were more than a harmless fruit drink. Sending Mel to recover the evidence, she exits the room with the angelic siblings and a now very nervous Charlie. The students are led to the meeting room where they learn that Eros himself has been called in to handle the situation. With Eros' wife currently smitten with him, Apollo is sweating bullets. It's then that the man they've all been waiting for makes a heated entrance and...well, being a fan of suspense, I'll leave off here and let you ponder the events to come. Enjoy the holiday break. There's no homework but there'll be lots to discuss when school's back in session.

{UPDATE}

pages 82-116

Who's up for a pop quiiiz?

. . .

Just kidding!

All joking aside, it's just about time for that final exam! That's right my diligent little bookworms, today's the day we conclude Book Three and see just how much you know about Charlie's love-in-idleness adventure!

While Eros doesn't initially show much concern for the academy's love crisis, he gets a bit more serious when he finds out his wife is head over heels for Apollo. A heated argument breaks out between the two, forcing Charlie to step forward to save Apollo from taking the blame—and a probable punch to the head. She explains to all present about the juice boxes she purchased from the faerie salesman in the woods and what the product was intended to do. With Mina's help, she describes the culprit, causing a light to go off in Eros's head.

One phone call (and a running refrigerator) later, Mr. Goodfellow is found and pinned to a tree in a flurry of heart-tipped arrows. That's right students, don't mess with love. The prankster tries to bolt but doesn't get far. With most of the staff, Brigit, Charlie, and the angel twins present he has nowhere to run. Eros reveals that the faerie menace goes by another name—Puck. Ringing any bells? If not, I strongly suggest that you brush up on your Shakespeare.

The 'salesman' turns out to be a bored gardener from Albion who amuses himself (and the King) by pulling pranks. Threatened with being turned over to Prie authorities, Puck confesses that the fiasco was all part of his 'diabolical plan', which seems to have worked out better than he'd expected. Eros issues the faerie an ultimatum, either turn everyone back to normal...or find himself going gaga over a tree. Apparently oaks just aren't his type, for Puck reluctantly reversed the effects of the spell—creating a multitude of awkward moments.

Puck is released on the not-so-likely terms of him behaving himself and staying clear of the school. Our heroine finds it hard to believe that the fae is dismissed with a mere slap on the wrist but learns that Puck's association with the King makes it difficult to punish him. Frustrated and confused, she calls out to the departing fae, curious to know why he would squander his magic making mischief when he could put it to better use. The simple answer? Because he can!

Oh well, at least Miss Fairfax and Mina were able to make amends and straighten out any misunderstandings between them. Charlie learns that love isn't something to be rushed, it must occur naturally. Her chances with Stellan are best left to fate (though there's no harm in being friends). As the girls head back to the academy, with a freaked out Kipp in tow, we see that Puck has chosen to linger close by. Seems he's taken a shine to the group—as playthings. I'd tell you more...but that's a story for Book Four!

Class dismissed!

For further reading you may want to check out the Muse Academy Archive. And remember: it never hurts to review!
