Genre: Fantasy/Western
Enjoyable all-ages comics are pretty hard to find nowadays, which is why one read of Bardsworth and I was hooked. The story focuses around a misfit named Mike Cosley, who is invited to attend Bardsworth University: a place for theatrical bards and talented wizards to hone their craft. Bardsworth's likeable characters and secondary characters, virtually laugh-a-day strips and wonderful plotlines make it a great read, and having a really friendly & helpful author doesn't hurt in the least either!

Genre: Fantasy/Western
It's rare to find a Western-styled comic that's as engaging as Chris Moujaes' Battlegate. This story centres around a young military officer who is called upon to accompany a 14-year-old delinquent named Hugo Hodako, who has been detained at their high-security detention camp for reasons unknown. As their journey progresses, the story takes a supernatural turn as more and more of Hugo's mysterious past is revealed ...

I came across Inverloch completely by chance. It was the last book in the store and, impressed by the cover artwork, I could only hope that the storyline was as good. Well it wasn't. The storyline surpasses the art. This is an absolute must for any fans of The Lord of the Rings and other fantasy mysteries. A young wolf-like creature named Acheron pledges to track down the long-lost friend of a beautiful elf who disappeared years ago, under very mysterious circumstances ...

Genre: Horror/Novella
I first studied this book for my English A-level and, years later, it still has the power to give me the chills. Adapted into an excellent (and terrifying) play, it tells the story of Arthur Kipps, a lawyer whose latest case brings him to the supposedly haunted Eel Marsh House and its alienated neighbours in Crythin Gifford. Do not read alone: if the ghosts don't get to you, the atmosphere will.

Genre: Retro/Tutorial
With cartoons such as Fairly Oddparents and My Life as a Teenage Robot came an increasing interest in the retro style of art. This book is an excellent tutorial, teaching you the basics of how to create believable characters in the retro design. It amazes me how the slightest tweak in design can bring out the personality of even the blandest character.

You can watch as many movies as you like, but nothing will ever beat the original. Dracula is composed entirely of primary sources - newspaper articles, journals and such - from a variety of different witnesses as though it were a genuine police evidence line-up, adding authenticity to the famously creepy tale. Jonathan Harker is a naive British lawyer who travels to Transylvania to meet the prospective homebuyer of an abbey in England, but who gets much more than he ever planned for ...

Genre: Fantasy/Epic Novel
A now-infamous trilogy for young adults and big kids alike, His Dark Materials follows the adventure of a girl named Lyra and her pursuit of the mystical 'Dust'. Accompanied by her spirit-guide Pantalaimon, she travels across worlds battling against oppressive forces that seem to prey on the most innocent of beings. The series is incredibly gripping, enthralling and is one of the rare modern young adult books that can really make you think.
